After18 is a small but ambitious charity based in Leicester since 2013. We support young refugees aged 13-25 to rebuild their lives here in the UK. We are led by the needs of the young people, which are in a constant state of change as geo-political situations around the world force them to move in order to seek safety.
We are called After18 because we recognise that a young person’s vulnerability and need for support does not end with childhood on their 18th birthday. We are a consistent point of information and support as they transition to adulthood.
Each year through a specialised programme of educational and wellbeing activities we support over 200 young people in Leicester to move towards economic, social and mental wellbeing and to thrive as independent adults. You can take a look at our projects here.
Who are we looking for?
We are seeking enthusiastic new trustees to bring fresh knowledge and experience to our board in support of the work that we do. This is a fantastic opportunity to join the diverse and friendly Trustee Board of a growing and well-regarded refugee charity.
We are currently recruiting for Board Members with the following skills/experience:
- Finance and Budget Management: we are looking for a Treasurer to join our Board. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in accounting or finance and a good understanding of financial management and reporting.
- Lived experience: to help us shape our services in the most effective way for the young people we work with, we are looking for Trustees who have first-hand experience of being a refugee and navigating the asylum system
We welcome applications from across the UK. Quarterly Trustee meetings take place in Leicester but can be joined online, although we do ask all Trustees to join our AGM in September in person.
What will you be doing?
In general, Trustees have the overall legal responsibility for After18. They make sure our finances and resources are well used to implement our mission and ensure good strategic management of the charity.
Being a trustee is a voluntary position. Preparation for quarterly Board meetings involves detailed reading of papers provided several days in advance. Trustees may also be consulted on an ad hoc basis by the charity’s staff on day-to-day programmes and operations.
The Treasurer has additional specific responsibilities, being responsible for overseeing After18’s financial affairs and ensuring they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice. They will ensure proper records are being kept by After18 staff and that effective financial procedures are in place. They will also oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits by After18 staff.
This is a rewarding role that will give you the opportunity to help shape the direction and development of our charity. As a Trustee on our Board, you will be making a difference in our local community and in the lives of the young people who access our services.
