Join our Board of Trustees

After18 is a small but ambitious charity based in Leicester since 2013, which helps young refugees aged 13-25 to rebuild their lives here in the UK. We are led by the needs of the young people, which are in a constant state of change as geo-political situations around the world force them to move in order to seek safety.

We are called After18 because we recognise that a young person’s vulnerability and need for support does not end with childhood on their 18th birthday. We are a consistent point of information and support as they transition to adulthood.

Each year through a broad programme of educational and wellbeing activities we support around 150 young people in Leicester to move towards economic, social and mental wellbeing and to thrive as independent adults. You can take a look at our projects here.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking enthusiastic new trustees to bring fresh knowledge and experience to our board in support of the work that we do. This is a fantastic opportunity to join the diverse and friendly Trustee Board of a growing and well-regarded refugee charity.

We are looking for applicants with:

  • leadership experience
  • fundraising or HR backgrounds
  • legal knowledge related to charities and employment
  • media or marketing skills.

We are especially interested to hear from those with their own lived experience of the refugee and asylum system.

We welcome applications from across the UK. The work of the Trustees is mostly carried out online although we expect all Trustees to attend our Annual General Meeting once a year in person in Leicester.

What will you be doing?

Trustees have the overall legal responsibility for After18. They make sure our finances and resources are well used to implement our mission and ensure good strategic management of the charity.

Being a trustee is a voluntary position. Trustees meet online quarterly to discuss the charity’s operations and direction, and once a year in Leicester for our AGM. Preparation for the meetings involves detailed reading of papers provided several days in advance. Trustees may also be consulted on an ad hoc basis by the charity’s staff on day-to-day programmes and operations.

This is a rewarding role that will give you the opportunity to help shape the direction and development of our charity. As a Trustee on our Board, you will be making a difference in our local community and in the lives of the young people who access our services.
